Nobody cares what your site looks like

theme

I have come to this realization over the years:

The uglier your site is, the better it will perform.

I have spent probably about thousand dollars on commercial wordpress themes over the years and it’s been a complete waste of money for the most part.

Save for a few sites - most of themes have extra features and bells/whistles that you don’t really need like extra sharing buttons and the like. I’ve been trying to minimize the stuff on my sites over the years because most of it is crap

There are some sites that are very well made and designed but with most sites that i go and visit I just want to read the content and not click ads or sharing buttons or even need a “featured image”

This post has a featured image which to be completely honest isn’t really needed. In fact - now that I think about it - after this I might remove them completely and just well, write. Images slow me and the site down as it’s one more thing to worry about when creating content.

Some of the best sites I have made when it comes to producing an income have been the ugliest sites I’ve ever seen but they get the point across of what I am trying to say or share.

The rest is just fluff.

First Words

The Atlantic has an interesting article on the baby’s first words:

A lot of kids have this disconcerting all-over-the-placeness with their early vocalizations,” says Michael Tomasello, a developmental psychologist at Duke University who studies the emergence of language and communication in babies and primates. There’s a gradualness to early words, he says. “Even things that someone would call a word, kids still use them in situations that are a bit baffling.”

Well worth the read.

My baby is starting to say “yes” (I think.)

On a quiet Friday evening (well, as quiet as you can get with a newborn in the house) I found a little script to count all the posts I have written over the years and it was quite a surprise that this number is that high.

It doesn’t feel like I have written all those posts but I guess over time I have. It’s taken me almost a decade of very sporadic writing to get there but hey, whatever. I guess my point is that If I can find the time to write close to 750 posts then so can you.

It feels good to have accomplished this, regardless whether I have much of an audience.

  • 5GB of 4G Data

  • Unlimited Talk and Text to 20 contacts

  • Safety Mode to Avoid Data Overages

  • Verizon Smart Family

  • DVD Quality Streaming

  • Data Boost.

Verizon Unlimited Plan Prices

Above Unlimited - $95.00 per line

Beyond Unlimited - $85.00 per line

Go Unlimited - $75.00 per line

Just Kids - $35.00 per line

What’s the Best Unlimited Verizon Plan?

If it we me, I would probably go with the Go Unlimited Plan as I really only use abut 3GB a month, but I do travel to Canada a fair bit so the fact that I can use my phone there as I would inside the US would be a great thing to have.

From Google Docs to Jekyll

I just want to share my current workflow in case this might help some others.

I have figured out how to publish my site regardless of computer I use allowing me to write my posts in Google Docs and then publish this site with Jekyll.

The first step obviously is to write your post in Google Docs. Heck you might even want to add an image or two like this one:

When done writing I use the Gabriel add-on to publish my post to Github. If I were hosting my site on Github Pages, then I would be done. But because I use firebase to host my site, I have to open my terminal and do a “git pull” to get my post locally on my computer.

After the git pull I run a jekyll build command to create my site with the updated post and then deploy my site to firebase hosting and then after a few seconds my site is live.
